The long line to enter Korean-Australian indie artist Hannah Bahng's show at the House of Blues San Diego last week was filled with fans, affectionately called blues, buzzing with anticipation and excitement. This was her first performance in San Diego, and fans were eager to see her perform. However, the immersion didn't end there: everywhere you looked, there was the cat character Hannah designed herself, called Zymmie, hanging from bags as a plushie, in fan-designed hairclips, stickers, tote bags, and even as a neon sign on stage.
The night began with an outstanding opening act by Mad Tsai, who is considered by blues as one of Hannah's closest friends. Tsai played a mix of fan favorites like "BITE," "stacy's brother," and "Killer Queen," along with new releases that had never been performed before, such as the emotional "In My Head" and fiery "HOUNDS OF HELL," to loud cheers.
Once the Zymmie neon sign lit up, the crowd erupted in thunderous cheers, eagerly awaiting Hannah's set. She began with a dreamy performance featuring "what never lived," the fan favorite "Satin Boy," and "tonight's the night i die to a frank ocean song."
After a brief pause to resolve an audio issue, the show resumed with high energy, showcasing Hannah's musical talents on both guitar and piano with "Vertigo" and "Abysmal."
Then came a cherished moment when Hannah looked for her "perfect blue" to join her on stage. A fan surprised her with a small Fuggler plush, which she quickly named Larry. After some photos and a dance-off, the lively atmosphere continued with a cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and a surprise performance of an unreleased track called "Malibu."
The final segment of the set featured "raison d’être,” “Orchid / Flame,” the pop/rock song "IM ME AGAIN,” “POMEGRANATE,” and a cover of Billie Eilish's "Wildflower," once again highlighting her incredible vocals. The night concluded with fan favorites, "Misunderstood" and "perfect blues," with fans singing and dancing along.
